The Leaning Tower
To this day can not be determined with certainty, when exactly was founded Leaning Tower or the purpose for which it was built. One version says, it is a remnant of the old castle, which had to exist here before the foundation of the town. The lowest part of the tower , is built to a height of about 10 meters of stone. Part of Clay was rebuilt only in the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, in parallel with the construction of the church p.w. St.. Anna. The old entrance to the tower is located at the first floor. To the interior of the building was originally one could get only the ladder, or external stairs. The room inside the building, located on ground level, available only from the top could serve as a dungeon hunger. Currently sows hunger is mostly buried in rubble.
Another concept shows a German historian and architect Kurt Bimler. He says, that is situated at the lowest point of the old town tower served as a gateway city. The third version finally gives, that the tower was built as the city bell tower. This role she served, moreover, from the fifteenth century until World War II. The new bell was hung from the Leaning Tower 1444 year. In 1507 year it was connected with the church p.w. St.. Anna using indoor porch, dzwonnikowi which facilitated movement from the church to the bell tower. In 1522 the bell-founder Wolf Spittel made another bell, the solemn dedication and suspension took place 7 June 1523 year. At the end of the sixteenth century porch was demolished, as a result of design tilted buildings cracked and threatened to collapse.
It is not known exactly, why the tower has slope. The source documents shows, that there is a late autumn 1598 year. It is commonly believed, may be the cause of vibrations tectonic, which recorded 15 September 1590 year. Perhaps these shocks have undermined the stability of the building. This does not preclude the, that the cause of the tilt was rozmoknięcie ground, which resulted in subsidence of the foundation.
Currently, the deviation from the vertical tower is 2,12 m. It is worth noting, that the measurements made 1977 found, that the deviation is 1,98 m.
In 1858 year, during the great fire of its upper part was destroyed. After the fire, the city authorities were going to completely dismantle the object, to the ruins is not jeopardized the safety of neighboring houses. Ultimately, however,, after construction expertise was decided, that scorched part of the tower will be rebuilt. Then I received a culmination in the form of swallow tails.
After the reconstruction, the height of the tower is 34 m. From the south was built also a small turret with spiral staircase. The work was finally completed 11 October 1860 year.
On the dome of the tower knob provided with a cross, in which an occasional letter issued by the then parish priest Johannes Grundeya and a medal struck by the city after the great fire. A few days later hanged three new bells, made by bell founder Hoberg Piława Upper.
In the year 1863 the tower was suspended new clock, made by a watchmaker Hoffmann of Oławy.
At the end of World War II hanging on the tower bells were removed and most likely melted.
In the postwar period the property was niezgospodarowany. Only in the late sixties through the efforts of Joseph Glabiszewskiego tower after some renovation has been adapted for tourism.
In the niches of the tower were two paintings on wood, made by an unknown artist. On the eastern side it was a copy of Raphael's Sistine Madonna, from the west Coronation of the Virgin Mary. Images have been removed in the nineties and after maintenance are stored at the City Hall. In the recesses, thanks to the efforts of the Earth Lovers Club Ząbkowicki, provided copies of images.
Currently, the Leaning Tower serves as a vantage point. In December 2007 completed a major renovation of the exterior walls of the object, so that the tower has regained its former glory.
